This semester, with the help of the artist Ian Sands, i was able to see the importance of embracing discomfort. Whether its because of a new medium you dont feel comfortable using, or an outside source putting stress on your thoughts and actions. By realizing the situation and taking action, you will pleasantly surprise yourself and learn from the result.
I was in influenced by the contemporary artist by the name of Ian Sands this semester in Art 3. My first project was inspired by a pinterest post of two dream catchers reflecting each other and resembling an owl. I sketched it out and wasn't sure what medium to use then my cup of coffee stained a rim on the paper, and i liked the organic look of the coffee on the owl. That's when i started painting with coffee and its grounds to add texture. My second piece took a long time coming... My stress and anxiety over life, school, and work were at a record breaking high and my thoughts resembled shards of glass, unfinished and unpleasant. I figured a collage was an appropriate way to go because collages are just a bunch of bits and pieces from all over smashed up into one. I knew i wanted to incorporate words more than pictures in my piece because words mean more and make more sense to me than pictures. I organized the words i cut out of magazines in alphabetical order and tried to maintain a black and white theme with small splotches of color. The word RUN shows up multiple times through out the piece because i felt like i was on the run for a couple months late last year, floating between housing situations and trying to run away from people and everything because i just needed breathing room. Its my favorite piece of this year because it reminds me why i made it and how i was feeling but still allows the viewer to ask questions about the collage.

1. I responded with what is not art? And I just realized I wrote that exact thing for my answer at the beginning of the year as well. I put that answer both times because I think everything is art, nature, food, teaching, sports. They're each an art but in different ways. So that must be a good enough explanation for me to use it at both the beginning and end of the semester. 2. Artist must use observation in order to understand the piece. Such as the pieces colors, flow and feel, it's proportions and size. In the beginning I wrote more about understanding the piece and it visually. But my recent answer was more along the lines of how they made that piece of art. What inspired them, where did the idea come from, the history of it. As well as the color choices and type of art it is. 6. In the beginning of the semester I listed some problems artist might face and all I said was supplies, judgement, and inspiration. This time around I wrote things such as money, popularity/fame, time, supplies, space, support and legal consent. I think I wrote more in the last one because I had to deal with those problems. Before I didn't so much art so as I explored it more. The more problems I had to face and overcome. 7. My first answer was I want to be more inspired and excited about doing art. Is said that because I really want excited to make art, I didn't like what I made half the time, I felt like none of it was good enough and I just wanted to feel excited about it again. I'm happy to say my second response was telling how much more inspired I am now, and how I feel great about my pieces and how I'm more confident and how I made some good friends here. The point of this class is not only to educate us on the different types of art, but to get us involved and give it a shot. For the destruction project we decided to destroy our pizza. we got it a big pizza box and put all our slices in it then we mixed water and red paint into a squirt bottle and started spraying the pizza with it to make it look like sauce. it ended up looking like blood but thats okay. then we shredded yellow and white papers in the library shredder to make it look like cheese and we then put that on top for a nice topping. so we made it look like a real pizza but also destroyed our collaborative project along the way.
For the artist collaborate project we all made individual slices of pizza then joined them together to make a big happy pizza pie. my slice was covered in paper origami butterflies and painted purple. i did butterflies because i learned how to make them before this project and i really enjoyed making them out of my chemistry homework so i wanted to incorporate them into this pizza project. For my illustration friday i decided to use the word silent. for some reason when i thought of silent i immediately thought of a lion or some big scary animal but having it portrayed in a gentle, silent, peaceful way. so thats what i did, i drew a quiet lion, mouth shut, just black and white drawing on a lions face. i used a pencil for this whole project and its something i am really proud of.
The hockey table is finally finished. after weeks of sawing, nailing and measuring this table is done. there were many complications with this project and i overcame most of them with the help of my loving group and classmates and mr. sands. i learned alot from this project and you will never see me making a table ever again but i can guarantee you will see me with a hockey stick. a few of the problems i experienced was having enough sticks, measuring the sticks correctly, cutting and nailing the sticks, then coming to the decision to make a shadow box instead of the actual table with legs. now im contemplating whether or not i should include some origami butterflies into the project. with all that being said, this was probably my most difficult project ever to complete, but its also one of the coolest.
1. Last week the hardest assignment we were given for me was the newspaper tower. it required you to think of a plan and how you were going to make the base strong and still build it up as tall as possible. so we tried doing just that by putting an odd but sturdy base for our tower then building off of that.
2. For my artist solve problems project i decided to do a little side table made of hockey sticks. i had 2 major obstacles i had to overcome for this project, the first being breaking my arty funk. i was in a funk and couldn't make anything i enjoyed or really was excited about until this project so thats good. my second problem i had to fix was executing this hockey table idea i had because i am not a handy person and i had to cut these sticks down to the right sizes, set up the frame, nail it all together and make sure it could actually stand on its own. with the help of my table and mr.sands it is finally coming together. im not finished but these are some of the hockey sticks im incorporating Th difference between copying and inspired to me is that when you copy you go in with the intention to forge or make the exact same piece without any personal artsy touches. Being inspired means that you found something that you really liked, took the idea with you and recreated it with your own personal touch.
i did the mad hatter as my observation project. as you can see im impatient and i kinda gave up on it and i wish i didn't but i started the project late and got mad at it. anyways, i learned at the beginning of the unit about facial proportions and shading which i tried incorporating in here. i chose the mad hatter because i love how out of the ordinary he looks and johnny depp is one of my favorite actors, i really like all the shapes and colors this character has.
This past weekend i ran a 5k in wilmington, it was the color me rad run which is a color run obviously. thats artsy because they throw this cornstarch food coloring mixture at you for 3.1 miles. and on top of that it rained the whole time so our color turned into a kinda paste that worked as paint for our faces. twas a jolly time.
